I liked Heroine's Quest when I played it a couple years ago! Though I also had some trouble with the battles early on until I got better spells (I only played it through as a sorceress).

If you like Heroine's Quest at all, I highly recommend Quest for Glory (especially if you do already own them)! The setting is a bit more whimsical and it's possible to play a single character through the entire series by importing it from game to game, but otherwise the gameplay is very similar.
