2018 New Year Meme

Here's 2018's year-end survey meme:

1. What did you do in 2018 that you’d never done before?
Divorced someone, and hopefully I never have to do it again.

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
No. I don't really make resolutions specifically on New Year's. I did keep up practicing both Japanese and coding (though I fell off a bit on the latter toward the end of the year), and I plan to keep doing that. Maybe try to go on a date.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not anyone who's close to me, really.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Thankfully, no.

5. What countries did you visit?
I was originally going to have gone to Japan in 2018, but for a variety of reasons it didn't happen.

6. What would you like to have in 2019 that you lacked in 2018?
I'll skip all of the bitter answers I could put here and say a different job. I have a job I like, and applied to a couple last year, but I never heard back from anyone. I've done what I do for a while but I think it's finally wearing on me.

7. What date from 2018 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
November 19th, the court date.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Being much more social. Talking to my family more. Going to much more live theatre. Answering last-minute invitations, inviting people to things, getting a group chat going with friends and going out to dinners and soon a brunch. Last night I answered a last-minute invitation and went to a NYE party in the suburbs! Me from last year would never even have considered that.

9. What was your biggest failure?
This isn't the answer I thought for most of the year, but not using my time well. I should have devoted more time to practice and less to playing games.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Not physically.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Probably the black cloak/poncho/cardigan I bought to complete my fashion transition into sithlord.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
A lot of the friends I've made this year, or the people I knew but with which I became much closer friends with. When I was really doing terribly, people consistently reached out to me, and checked up on me. Thank you all.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Well, you know.

But other than that, some people I thought I was friends with who turned their back on me without hesitation or explanation.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Food and transit, going to all those theatre events and eating with friends. It's a good thing I have a CTA pass or I'd have spent a lot more money than I did.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Honestly? Nothing.

16. What song will always remind you of 2018?
"Happy Now" by Zedd.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? To this time last year, happier.
ii. thinner or fatter? Thinner, but only slightly. Someone at the NYE party last night kept commenting on it.
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer as of December. Thank you, stock market.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Practiced coding. Talked to people.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Played video games I didn't care about. Panicked.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I'm Jewish. Which is to say, I didn't do anything.

21. Is there a particularly memorable meal you had?
I hosted a Seder and did almost all the cooking for it. That was pretty memorable. I also did a bunch of the cooking for [twitter.com profile] lisekatevans's birthday dinner.

22. Did you fall in love in 2018?
No.

23. How many one-night stands?
None.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
Probably 青春ブタ野郎はバニーガール先輩の夢を見ない, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny-Girl Senpai which is actually a witty deconstruction of harem anime plots with a protagonist that's likable, in a healthy relationship, and has very few bunny girls.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Hate? Nah.

26. What was the best book you read?
Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Probably Paleowolf, who makes prehistoric ambient. Here's the song Animus, which is one of my favorites.

Runner-up is Illenium. Here's Fortress.

28. What did you want and get?
A much better social life.

29. What did you want and not get?
Closure. A vacation in Japan.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Black Panther, which is one of the few films I saw in 2018.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 36, and I think I stayed home and played games.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
You know the answer to this.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2018?
Prepping for how we're all supposed to dress in 2019.

One night out someone asked me if I was a cleric, and I guess from a certain point of view...

34. What kept you sane?
Mostly my friends, though podcasts and the video games I liked had a good role in it too.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I don't. I don't pay enough attention to pop culture to.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Immigration
"You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt"
-Exodus 22:20.
37. Who did you miss?
The person I thought I was married to.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I don't know that I can provide a simple answer to this. I've met so many wonderful people this year.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2018.
People will repeatedly lie to you with a smile on their face and go home and sleep well that night if they can justify it to themselves.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
"'When it went down, it was so hard to breathe
I gave up everything in a slow fall down to the floor
Life was escaping me, I couldn't find myself
'Til it was all lost, not anymore

I'm holding on to all the pieces of my heart's debris
'Til it's time
I'll pull it together and fix myself eventually
And know it's mine

I found gold in the wreckage, put it on a necklace
Keepin' it 'cause I, I, I, I know that it's mine
I wear it like a message so I don't forget it
Keepin' it 'cause I, I, I, I know that it's mine

I know that it's mine no matter what I do
I know that it's mine whether I win or lose
And even though my heart needs to take its time
I know that it's mine, I know that it's mine"
-Phoebe Ryan, "Mine"
