And that makes sense! I have friends who primarily engage in certain series or works through the fan community--one reads reams of Star Wars fanfiction and has no interest in seeing the new trilogy, for example--so I understand it has a lot a appeal, but you're right, that's not really the way I tend to engage with media. My fan creative activities are mostly tabletop RPGs...though speaking of which, that same friend has been running a Dragon Age TTRPG for over a year despite having never played any of the games, so I guess the same principle applies.
Though thinking about, I didn't like Mass Effect II or III either, so maybe I'm just not a fan of Bioware's particular style of characterization even though I really like the worlds. And I have thought about setting a TTRPG in the Mass Effect universe before...
