That's definitely the case with fanfic. I have one friend who is pretty good at writing their own stories within the established universe with OC characters or only cameos from canon characters. I enjoy their stories because I trust their writing, but in general, the whole point of fanfic for me is that there is a certain "jump right in" aspect to reading about characters you already know and have an attachment to.
