Heisei 2. Since the Shōwa emperor died partway through 1989, the part of 1989 before he died is Shōwa 64, and the part after he died is Heisei 1.

Is there a particular era of history you're interested in? I know some excellent WWII and post-WWII Japanese history books, but I'd have to dig harder for earlier periods.
