New Year's Retrospective 2022

I am 300 entries behind on my reading page. I really need to get on that.

In the meantime, here is the traditional New Year's retrospective meme, one day later than I originally planned because yesterday was Asarah b'Tevet and I didn't have much concentration to hand.

1. What did you do in 2022 that you’d never done before?
Taken someone to a pediatric hospital.

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't do New Year's resolutions, so I will neither keep them nor make more.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No one this year

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Thank G-d, no--this year that was a more imminent possibility.

5. What countries did you visit?
There was so much going on this year that we didn't have the energy, money, or time to travel, though we do want to go to Japan.

6. What would you like to have in 2023 that you lacked in 2022?
Fewer trips to the hospital.

7. What date from 2022 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
January 12th, the day we first noticed Laila's infantile spasms.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Not so much an achievement, but successfully keeping my family above water when I was the only healthy one for most of the year.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not doing more to keep the house in order.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I fortunately did not, but the people near me weren't so lucky.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Health insurance, which as a conservative estimate saved my family probably $300,000 this year and possibly more. America. Emoji Sad Eagle Flag

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
[instagram.com profile] sashagee, for noticing something wrong with Laila right away. The doctors at Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, for listening to her and getting Laila into treatment immediately.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
I was too busy focusing on my family to really pay attention to much else for much of the year.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Into medical care for Laila and [instagram.com profile] sashagee.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
All the EEGs that came back normal every further checkup that Laila had.

16. What song will always remind you of 2022?
I'm honestly not sure I listened to music at all for the entire year other than the music that [instagram.com profile] sashagee played, so maybe 보라빛 밤 ("porappippam") by Sunmi.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? About the same
ii. thinner or fatter? Thinner
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer thanks to medical costs

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Seen friends. It was very easy for me to just get absorbed into the grind because [instagram.com profile] sashagee was sick so I had to do almost all of the errands and chores, but every time I made time for friends it was the highlight of my week. I should have remembered that better during the other times.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Been grumpy.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
We spent it at [instagram.com profile] sashagee's parents' house and then went to my parents' house, since our parents live five minutes from each other.

21. Is there a particularly memorable meal you had?
No.

22. Did you fall in love in 2021?
No.

23. How many one-night stands?
None.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
Spy x Family.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No.

26. What was the best book you read?
The Bathhouse at Midnight: An Historical Survey of Magic and Divination in Russia.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I honestly don't think I discovered anything new this year.

28. What did you want and get?
My daughter to keep her smile.

29. What did you want and not get?
A year with no health problems.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
I did not watch a single movie the entire year.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 40! My parents came into town and we went to a local restaurant which has now closed, which is sad because the shakshuka was delicious.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Little baby Laila not having any health troubles.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2020?
Goth dad. There were sometimes sweatpants and undershirts involved, but all of them were black.

34. What kept you sane?
The good days that [instagram.com profile] sashagee had and how Laila was good for most of the year.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I have never answered this question because I don't follow celebrity culture.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
I did not have a lot of time to pay attention to politics, but the American elections is most of what I devoted my energy to, and it turned out relatively well. I also payed attention to the Israeli elections, and those were much less favorable.

37. Who did you miss?
My friends, who I have seen even less than usual what with having a sick baby and a sick fiancée.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I don't know, honestly. This year was a blur.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2022.
גם זה יעבור. Gam zeh ya'avor--"This too shall pass."

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
I used to post this all the time but now it's extra applicable:
A long December and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can't remember the last thing that you said as you were leaving
Now the days go by so fast

And it's one more day up in the canyons
And it's one more night in Hollywood
If you think that I could be forgiven
I wish you would

Happy New Year to everyone!
