Umbrellas and rain is a feature of the UK. We do see a lot of broken ones but probably not as bad as there as it's not always that windy. Can you buy those "unbreakable" ones? They blow inside out and then spring back, but they always break in the end. I like the spring step off event at work, what a good idea.
