dorchadas: (Darker than Black)

Apparently there's something about Iceland. I've never been there but I keep seeing my friends posting about it on Facebook, taking multiple trips, searching for cheap airfair, planning their next trip immediately after returning from their previous one. I understand the lure, since that's how I feel about Japan, even if it's not a pull I feel myself. But that's why this chocolate jumped out at me even though it was on the very bottom shelf and out of my easy sightlines.

Chocolate isn't something that I would consider as traditionally Icelandic, for the reason that cacao plants obviously can't grow in that kind of climate. But in the modern world, something dating back to 1933 might as well be traditional. The average age of an S&P 500 company is 15 years. Eighty-four years is astonishing, and I wanted to try this chocolate and see what draw was.

The company that makes the chocolate has a website, where they say they provide 30% of Iceland's candy market. And this chocolate is listed there, with much more interesting packaging. The chocolate I bought has a nice, off-white wrapping, but I like the idyllic waterfall among green hills.

Week 51 packaging
Not as impressive now that I know the alternate packaging.

There's a kind of Icelandic yogurt called skyr, which stretches back centuries and is traditional by any definition. It's probably our favorite yogurt, and even now there's a big pile of Siggi's triple cream skyr in our fridge. It's expensive, but definitely worth the cost.

This chocolate reminds me a lot of that yogurt. It's thick and creamy, with a a sweet taste that doesn't overwhelm the darkness of the chocolate. I had to force myself to eat it only a couple squares at a time and not just stuff entire chunks of the bar into my mouth. And there were two bars in the packaging! We only ate one, because it was just after lunch and we were full from chicken and waffles (Western breakfast, for once), but when I finished the first bar I took a long look at the second bar before wrapping it up and putting it away. Maybe after dinner.

There's no special hook for this chocolate, but over the course of doing this series I've grown leery of flavored chocolates. Often it doesn't add anything, or even fights against the chocolate flavor. Sometimes, simplicity is best.

Week 51 chocolate
"Sirius" confused me before I looked it up. I wonder why they don't put the accents on the I's?

Sometimes chocolate doesn't need a lot of extras. I love good plain chocolate because it's kind of like the perfect classic black dress: well made and beautiful for being simple. I love the taste and texture of this. It's a bit sweeter than I tend to eat but was velvety and self-indulgent. I am very full after eating it and really don't have that desire I can have after eating darker than black chocolates to have a little extra. I would so buy this again!
I am not quite so full, and I'm getting hungrier after writing this! And there's a voice that tells me that the chocolate is already open, so it needs to be eaten soon to keep it from going bad...

Looking forward to dessert after dinner! Emoji Happy cat
