Verily, the employee's daily prayer.

The ability to live in a small town and partake of its more natural rhythms is an under-appreciated luxury. To make ends meet, most families have to sacrifice at least one member to make the daily commute into the metropolis. At a certain point, so many have been sacrificed that the metropolis takes notice and demands the entirety of the town. I wonder if this is inevitable, or merely a function of late-stage capitalism.

The haiku is beautiful, but I don't really understand how the grammar in it works. Would you be willing to give a quick lesson?
