I smashed my toe on the island when walking today, so I've spent most of it playing Stellaris and FFXIV when I really wanted to get some walking in. Fortunately, since
sashagee bought that ice pack for her back, I've been using it on my foot. I should be able to get 10,000 steps today yet!
Thursday was my outdoor picnic birthday organized by
britshlez. We went to the parklike area on Ravenswood and we all brought our own drinks--though
lisekatevans brought me a pre-made drink she said was about three cocktails' worth of booze--and sat and chatted for a while.
sashagee made me a spice cake and we cut it up into pieces and individually boxed them for everyone, so we had drinks and cake and sat out on the grass in the sunset. I wasn't planning on having a birthday party at all, so I'm glad I got to see people at a relatively close range!
In
my last post, I mentioned that the farmer's market dinner might be better if I had made it into soup, and so yesterday I tested that hypothesis. I cooked up some chicken broth, put a bunch of smoked paprika and a bit of white pepper and olive oil into it, and then poured it over the leftovers.
It was delicious.
The last major event is that
sashagee and I both met each other's parents on Friday. I took the day off and, thinking that I had only taken a half-day off, she had already told her parents she'd come out to see them that morning. Since I was free, I came with her, and since her parents live only a few minutes away from mine, we went to both sets of parents in one day. It was only slightly awkward, with her father asking me a bit about myself but mostly reminiscing with her grandmother about relatives that she hadn't met before, but they were pretty friendly. He said that he had expected her to bring me, and that if we didn't already have other plans they would have taken us out to lunch, but instead we raided my parents' chest freezer for chili and meatballs and they gave me my birthday presents and an enormous freezer bag full of salmon. I'm in breakfast salmon for at least the next month.
We also brought some spice cake to my parents. They texted me later to say how good it was.
