* And another hour long interview that seems very worth my time just dropped. I still haven't finished the What Chaos interview with Robbie. Just need to take all the HR content a sip at a time. Well, not all the content. I don't need to see all ten thousand promo vids, but all the content that I want to get to is going to last me a whiiiiille.

* For most of the season the Kraken had a lot of top players in the Injured Reserve list. We aaaaalmost have everyone back except Murray. Which means we might be able to do something wacky called 'play a game with the roster we intended for this season'.

But the downside is returning players means we need at least one person off the roster, and only a few can do so without waivers. Hockey talk )

Challenge #7

LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They don’t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want.

This is a fun prompt because it makes me think about myself like a character that I'm trying to describe to someone else. That may be why these are all things that could be observed if you watched me for a week. Also, all of these things seem incredibly irrelevant in the dreamwidth space.

1. I'm always ready to dance. At a concert, in a grocery store aisle, at 7am at the airport, you name it. Somatic movement, as the kids say.

2. I really like my own image/voice. If I'm having a hard time motivating myself to do something- like practicing my ukulele or cooking- I will record myself for the motivation of being able to watch a recorded version of myself doing it.

3. I love a good party, even with people I don't know. In general, I'm pretty introverted and love spending time by myself, but I know how to work a room and I have fun doing it. I learned this from my mother, who isn't super social either but still really great at chatting up strangers and making people comfortable.

Bonus: I love that so many people doing this are talking about how they like that they write/are good writers. People on dreamwidth are such phenomenal writers (I'm thinking about fic and journal entries and meta and so on). I am continually gobsmacked by the quality of writing on this site, so I'm thrilled that people know it about themselves. Damn straight, everyone. You are good writers. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Doctor visit

Got up at 10:00 today and had breakfast and coffee, then showered and dressed. Then I killed time until 1:15 when I took an Uber over to my surgeon for my every six months checkup.

I got there a bit early an settled in to wait, this is after all the doctor's where I once waited like two hours to be seen. But they got to me at only about 15 minutes after my appointment time.

They weighed me and took my blood pressure and then the surgeon gave me a very thorough breast exam. We discussed books too, which was nice.

All is well and she gave me the order for my annual mammogram and sonogram in April, and also my every two years bone density scan in April. And I go back to see her in July.

Then I took an Uber home. I texted the Kid, to let her know what the doctor said, and she replied.

For the rest of the day I did various things that I need to get done for tomorrow, leaving for Arisia. I cleaned the cat pan, I put more water in the turtle tank, I cleaned the bowls that will be used for food and water for Oreo. I took the kitty litter and empty litter box out and walked around the block.

At 7:00 I Teamed the FWiB though we had technical difficulties. We talked until a bit before 8:00 when I got off to have my Al-anon meeting by Zoom. That went very well indeed, though M wasn't there.

After that I had dinner, and went and charged my phone. [personal profile] mashfanficchick called and we are talking now as I type, discussing tomorrow and Arisia.

I fed the pets and started here.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Good report from the surgeon.

3. Got stuff done.

4. Found my Enterprise pendent necklace to wear.

5. My cold is better.

6. Arisia in two days!

While listening to the Sam Seder podcast today, someone sent in a report about increased activity at the Burlington ICE facilities. Stay alert folks.

u/Neat-Beautiful-5505 • 4h ago

Another Reddit post showed three 18-wheel trucks hauling several new SUVs each to the Burlington ICE facility.

u/_still_truckin_ • 4h ago

Two dozen white Ford Explorers. They’re the same Interceptor models that real police departments use. You can spot them by the searchlight mounted to the driver side A-pillar and lack of tracks for roof racks. Saw them in the parking lot of the Burlington ICE building.

u/ThePirateKing01 • 4h ago

Shoutout to @BearingWitnessBurlington on YouTube and TikTok

To those who say protesting peacefully doesn’t amount to much, this person has been both protesting and monitoring the facility almost 24/7. Without people like this we wouldn’t have the heads up that we do now

“The bottom line: While no operation has been officially confirmed, Boston is not waiting to find out — it is mobilizing now.”

Good!

Remember, ICE needs a warrant to enter any private residence or business. Business that aren’t fascist supporting should have signs that they will not allow ICE entry without a warrant.

Copied and pasted from Safari reader mode [the Axios article:]

“Boston quietly prepares for an ICE surge Mike Deehan Boston City Hall is privately getting ready for a potential spike in Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity.

Why it matters: Even without a confirmed federal operation, the city is "planning for the unthinkable," according to Mayor Michelle Wu.

Escalating tensions and violence in other cities are deepening anxieties within immigrant communities and worsening the friction between sanctuary communities and federal authorities. The latest: Wu confirmed on WBUR this week that she is discussing enforcement scenarios with Boston Police leadership.

Her goal is to establish clear protocols to ensure local police resources are not co-opted into federal immigration efforts. Wu maintains that Boston police will not leak information to ICE, a stance she views as crucial to maintaining community trust. The big picture: Boston isn't alone in bracing for federal action.

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons has stated plans for a larger presence in Boston, promising more agents following disputes over sanctuary policies. Past initiatives mobilized large-scale enforcement across Massachusetts. Zoom in: Unverified but persistent reports from residents and activists note a delivery of SUVs to the Burlington ICE Field Office last week.

Advocates interpret the arrival of three car carriers hauling SUVs as a sign that the local ICE branch is staffing up. What we're watching: If federal enforcement accelerates, pressure will mount on public-facing institutions and communities with sanctuary policies.

Courthouses are typically a flashpoint for arrests. City community centers and schools will need to know how to respond if agents appear at their doors. ICE likely won't limit large-scale enforcement to Boston. Municipalities with large immigrant populations like Chelsea, Everett, Lawrence, Revere and Lynn could also be in the crosshairs. Threat level: Activists have staked out the Burlington ICE office for months and will likely be among the first to know of any major rollout.

Expect throngs of Massachusetts residents to demonstrate against ICE if a surge happens here. The bottom line: While no operation has been officially confirmed, Boston is not waiting to find out — it is mobilizing now.”

Garden, New Panels, Radio

[personal profile] ranunculus
Since the sun came out the garden has gotten quite a lot of love.  The iris bed with the white irises in it got dug over, the irises lifted and divided.  It has been at least two or possibly 3 decades since the iris have been divided and they were in a sorry state.  There are great numbers of various iris plants sitting around waiting for new homes most of them quite small.   The (few) replanted iris should thrive.  They will be extra happy without the grass that was threatening to choke them out.  Some of the white iris will be replaced with bronze/pink iris from Henry St, and possibly some other colors.
Elsewhere in the garden; A couple of beds no longer have dying tomatoes in them which makes the fava beans, which were trying to grow in tomato plant shade, really happy.  Tons of grass has been pulled out and dead sunflowers pulled out to add to the compost. Still have two big beds to go but things are definitely looking a lot better.  Sadly there are vole trails all over.  They love all the overgrown plants.  Yesterday traps were set out to reduce the vole population.  So far I've caught 3.

Today the new metal fence panels for Winter Quarters arrived.  Dave and his son Grant came up to help.  We removed the old beat up/broken panels that decidedly did not fit and put new ones in their place.  It all fits and looks SO much better. Included in this order were several gates, one of which is now hanging from the front-center of the Winter Quarters run in shedrow.  For months we have been using a temporary panel as a gate. This meant lifting it and hooking it on a hinge pin fitting that was loosely attached. It worked surprisingly well as a latch, but it was a pain in the neck to use. Today we replaced that panel with a nice gate on real hinges!

This afternoon I had an interview down at the local community radio station.  I think it went well.  Hopefully I didn't say "um" too many times!  It was kind of fun: The lady who was interviewing me was using some new equipment; when she had trouble getting her sound levels right, my Stagehand training kicked in and we were able to solve them together.

* I have a strong sense of who I am as a person and I'm comfortable with myself.

* I always try to be kind, but I also won't let anyone take advantage of me.

* I'm really, really good at my job, which has allowed me to pretty much do whatever I want when I need it. Need to work from home, even though it's an in-office day? It's fine because everyone I work for trusts me.

For about a week after new year, there'd been no sign of Raj, the black-and-white kitty who comes to my studio, begging for pets (and snacks). Since the weather was horrible, this tended to confirm my theory that he's actually got a home, he's just hitting me up for second breakfast.

About three days ago, I heard the familiar meow! outside the studio door, looked out to see no sign of him. Wasn't by the back yard, wasn't coming around from front, wasn't under the van.

He was on the roof. Right over the studio door.

He's been back every day since, sometimes multiple times, was even on the roof again last night. Then this evening, I saw a black-and-white kitty under the car as I came up from the mail box.

It wasn't him. It was the shy kitty with the jingle collar that we're calling Belle. Same shiny coat and thick short tail, but with no ring around the muzzle. And no pets. She's too shy to let anyone near her.

Best-laid plans

We'd made plans for a short getaway in the week between Christmas and New Years, just up to Portland to visit the zoo and art museum, but our cat sitter didn't return our texts and then the weather got bad and so we stayed home instead. Which was nice, because I couldn't do much in the studio, having only 25 lbs. of clay left, so I read a bit and napped a bit and got all the family Christmas presents packed and shipped by New Year's Eve. So that was nice.

Then I got the Christmas letter to my nephew returned to sender and realized that they'd moved and I had to figure out how to get their Christmas present to the new address which I didn't have yet and that involved a long stay on hold with UPS, who directed me back to Shippo, who then determined that I couldn't redirect the package because of the plan I'd bought for shipping, but I could have it returned to sender, no charge. So we caught it in Minneapolis and it's coming back here tomorrow.

My ton of clay finally got delivered last Tuesday, in the midst of a rain and sleet-storm, so that was fun. And the replacement part for my kiln vent arrived the same day, though one piece--the intake manifold--was rusted solid onto the old unit, so I had to spend an hour on hold with Skutt trying to get the part number for a replacement, while I was moving clay into the studio. I eventually had to give up--they were closing at 5--left a message, then an email, and finally got the number yesterday, ordered this morning. Meanwhile, the tools and parts are cluttering up the top of the kiln.

So throwing 75-100 lbs. of pots a day has been, by comparison, positively relaxing.

Oh, deliberate for sure! In the original version, which was a spec script for Hallmark, I used a common "pair the spares" subplot where the romantic leads' sidekicks (best friend, assistant, relative, etc) end up in the start of a relationship just as the leads are affirming theirs near the end of the film. The Agricultural Cabinet scene in the novel is a relic of the movie script where Jerry realizes he might be into Alanna.

Jerry and Al were always meant to have known each other, but the speed at which Jerry gets into agronomy was much faster and the joke was that he fell for her because of her family's vineyards. I took that out when I adapted it to a novel because it felt more artificial in a novel and I figured I'd give them their own. The first and third books were very planned, Michaelis was a surprise :D

Day 1820: "That jerk will be gone soon."

Day 1820

Today in one sentence: At least six federal prosecutors in Minnesota and at least five senior prosecutors in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division resigned over the Trump administration’s handling of the fatal shooting of Renée Good by an ICE officer; Minnesota, Minneapolis, and St. Paul sued the Trump administration to block what they called an “unprecedented” surge of thousands of federal immigration officers into the area; Trump encouraged Iranian protesters to “keep protesting” and to “take over your institutions,” saying “help is on the way”; Jeanine Pirro subpoenaed the Federal Reserve without seeking approval from senior Justice Department officials; Global central bank leaders issued a rare joint statement backing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell; consumer prices rose 2.7% in December from a year earlier; and about 1.4 million fewer people have enrolled in Affordable Care Act health plans so far this year.

1/ At least six federal prosecutors in Minnesota and at least five senior prosecutors in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division resigned over the Trump administration’s handling of the fatal shooting of Renée Good by an ICE officer. In Minnesota, at least five prosecutors from the U.S. attorney’s office in Minneapolis, including the office’s second-in-command, stepped down after the Justice Department wanted to investigate Good’s widow for possible ties to activist groups protesting immigration enforcement – rather than open a civil rights investigation into the shooting. And in Washington, five senior prosecutors in the criminal section of the Civil Rights Division said they were leaving after the department declined to pursue a criminal civil rights probe, even as Trump administration officials publicly described Good as a “domestic terrorist” without providing evidence. The Justice Department, however, said the Civil Rights Division leaders had requested early retirement before the shooting and said “any suggestion to the contrary is false.” (New York Times / Minnesota Public Radio / Washington Post / MS Now / Axios / New York Times)

  • poll/ 53% of voters said the fatal shooting of Renée Good by an ICE officer was not justified, 35% said it was justified, and 12% didn’t have an opinion. 57% disapprove of how ICE is enforcing immigration laws and 52% disapproved of the way Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem is handling her job. (Quinnipiac)

2/ Minnesota, Minneapolis, and St. Paul sued the Trump administration to block what they called an “unprecedented” surge of thousands of federal immigration officers into the area. The lawsuit, asking a federal judge to order the agents removed immediately, alleged the deployment and enforcement tactics violate the Constitution, including the Tenth Amendment. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said the state was being targeted and called the operation a federal “invasion.” About 2,000 DHS officers and agents are already deployed to the area and roughly 1,000 more CBP officers are being sent. Federal officials, meanwhile, called the suits baseless and saying immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility. The White House called the lawsuit a “pathetic stunt” that prioritizes “illegal criminals” over Americans. (NBC News / New York Times / Axios / Politico / New York Times)

  • The Trump administration will end Temporary Protected Status for Somali nationals, forcing those covered to leave the U.S. by March 17. Minnesota is home to the nation’s largest Somali community. (Bloomberg / The Guardian / NBC News)

3/ Trump encouraged Iranian protesters to “keep protesting” and to “take over your institutions,” saying “help is on the way.” Iran is facing nationwide protests over the collapse of Iran’s economy and political repression. Security forces have responded by killing more than 2,000 people and arresting roughly 16,700, while shutting down the internet to prevent demonstrators from organizing and to stop images and video from reaching the outside world. Trump, meanwhile, said he had “cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS.” The White House is reportedly considering a range of options on Iran, ranging from nonmilitary steps to possible strikes. (Wall Street Journal / Bloomberg / Axios / New York Times / Associated Press / Washington Post / Wall Street Journal / Bloomberg / Washington Post)

4/ Jeanine Pirro subpoenaed the Federal Reserve without seeking approval from senior Justice Department officials. Nevertheless, the former Fox News host now serving as U.S. attorney in Washington said she plans to keep pursuing a criminal probe tied to Chairman Jerome Powell’s congressional testimony on headquarters renovation cost overruns. Powell said the Justice Department served the Fed with grand jury subpoenas and threatened a criminal indictment that he described as politically motivated pressure over interest rate policy. Pirro said the Fed had “ignored” her office’s outreach, “necessitating the use of legal process.” The Fed reportedly received two emails from Pirro’s office late last year that didn’t cite a criminal inquiry or set response deadlines. (Bloomberg / The Hill / NBC News / ABC News / Politico)

  • Trump has repeatedly complained to aides that Attorney General Pam Bondi is weak and ineffective. Trump’s complaints reportedly focus on Bondi’s failure to prosecute FBI Director James Comey and New York Democratic Attorney General Letitia James. (Wall Street Journal)

5/ Global central bank leaders issued a rare joint statement backing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell after the Justice Department served the Fed with grand jury subpoenas tied to his congressional testimony on renovations of its Washington headquarters. “We stand in full solidarity with the Federal Reserve System and its Chair Jerome H. Powell,” the officials said, arguing that central bank independence is a “cornerstone of price, financial and economic stability.” Powell said the subpoenas amounted to political “intimidation” aimed at forcing faster interest rate cuts. Trump, meanwhile, denied ordering the investigation but continued to attack Powell, saying he was “either incompetent or crooked” and complaining that the Fed chair was “billions of dollars over budget” on the renovation, before later adding: “That jerk will be gone soon.” (Politico / Bloomberg / New York Times / CNBC / Bloomberg / Wall Street Journal / Axios / Associated Press)

6/ Consumer prices rose 2.7% in December from a year earlier, matching November, with core inflation running about 2.6% to 2.7%. With inflation still above the Fed’s 2 percent goal, Federal Reserve officials are expected to hold rates steady even as Trump demands “MEANINGFULLY” lower rates. (CNN / CNBC / Bloomberg / Wall Street Journal / Washington Post / New York Times)

7/ About 1.4 million fewer people have enrolled in Affordable Care Act health plans so far this year compared with last year’s final enrollment. Measured against the same point in last year’s enrollment window, sign-ups were down by about 800,000 people, reflecting declines among both new enrollees and returning customers. The figures reflect only early January selections and doesn’t distinguish between people postponing enrollment, switching coverage, or exiting the insurance market entirely. (Associated Press / New York Times / NBC News)

The 2026 midterms are in 294 days; the 2028 presidential election is in 1,029 days; it’s been 25 days since the Trump administration was required by law to release the Epstein files.

✏️ Notables.

  1. Former Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith will testify publicly before the House Judiciary Committee on Jan. 22 about his Trump investigations. The appearance follows a closed-door deposition where Smith said the Jan. 6 Capitol riot “does not happen” without Trump and denied claims that his prosecutions were designed to block Trump’s 2024 return to power. Smith’s investigations produced two indictments that were later abandoned after Trump won the presidency due to longstanding Justice Department policy barring prosecution of a sitting president. (NBC News / Associated Press)

  2. Bill Clinton refused to appear for a House Oversight Committee deposition in its Jeffrey Epstein investigation, prompting Chairman James Comer to threaten contempt of Congress even though Clinton hasn’t been accused of wrongdoing. Clinton and his lawyers called the subpoena legally invalid, and accused Republicans of selectively enforcing compliance for political effect. Comer said the committee will proceed toward a contempt vote anyway. (Washington Post / Associated Press / Politico / New York Times)

  3. A House Republican introduced legislation to authorize Trump to annex or otherwise acquire Greenland. Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, however, rejected the premise and said Greenland would choose Denmark and “does not want to be part of the United States.” (Axios / Bloomberg / New York Times / Politico)

3. I like myself much better than I did 4 years ago. I grew up with some terrible things as a child, so it's going to take forever to get past all that. I'm still working on it.
