Geekgasms galore.
The link is to a (rather long) video demonstration of the game Spore, which is kind of SimEarth-esque. It starts with a single-celled organism, then progresses up through multicellular water and then land life, then to a civilization, then to other planets... All the while, the content is fully customizable. In the early stages of the game, you play one creature who is full customizable through the generations with points you earn through survival. Want five legs and tentacles? Fine. Want three legs, two arms, and several mouths? Also fine? Want to be a carnivorous carebear (one of the example creatures in the video)? Dandy. It's all possible with the in-game editor. The game will also fill in other ecological niches with creatures based on a similar design philosophy to yours--if you're a three legged carnivore, the herbivores will probably have three legs as well.
Once your little guy evolves sentience, it becomes more sim-city-esque, where you have a tribe of them, then a city, to command. There will be other cities on the planet you can ally or war with as well, possible with much different design philosophies and cultures than your own. Eventually, you gain the ability to leave your planet and colonize other worlds, and after that, the ability to go to other solar systems and see what life is there. You can trade with them, war with them, uplift them (2001 monolith style) to sentience, blow up their planets--whatever.
And, all of this content can be uploaded to other players, and you can in turn download their content to use in your world/solar system/galaxy.
Wow.
Just wow.
