dorchadas: (Darker than Black)

This is the second chocolate we bought after our trip to Seattle--you can read about the first one here, as well as the trip. It took us a while to get around to it for various reasons, but to all things there is a season.

This chocolate is extremely Washington. The back of the packaging reads like a summary of the Wikipedia entry for the state and includes all those useless state trivia bits. I just learned that the state slogan is "Say WA!" which I would say is the silliest state slogan I've heard, but it'd be a contest of one. I don't even know the slogan for Illinois, and I can't imagine more than a single-digit percentage of state residents do. Definitely don't ask me about other states.

([personal profile] schoolpsychnerd suggested that Illinois's unofficial slogan is "I take the fifth.")

The state flower is the rhododendron. I always associate that with Oregon, because my grandparents lived on Rhododendron Drive.

It certainly doesn't leave room for misinterpretation.

Washington, Washington, twelve stories high, made of radi-

Oh, sorry. Wrong Washington.

The taste of this chocolate was nothing to write home about. It was sweeter than I'm used to at 62% cacao, but not so sweet that my mouth hurt after I ate it, the way it does with the assorted truffles I picked up at Jewel on a whim. It's okay. Emoji Cute shrug

But the texture is fantastic. It's crunchy enough that it snaps when broken and provides tangible resistance when bitten into, but after a moment in the mouth, it smooths out into a thick, creamy delight. A slightly-too-sweet delight, but all things upon this fallen world are flawed. If there were a way to maintain this same texture and apply it to something darker, it'd quite possibly become my new favorite chocolate. Most extremely dark chocolate is very brittle and it's sometimes more prone to shattering than melting when bitten.

That pattern does kind of look like a rhododendron...

I was skeptical of airport chocolate. I mean, it's airport chocolate so I wasn't really expecting a lot. And in that respect the bar surpassed my expectations because it was overall a good bar. It was sweeter than I like it, but it had really nice texture to it. The smoothness made up for the sweetness. It was good, if i got hit with a chocolate craving in the airport I'd get it, but I don't think I'd seek it out without a major chocolate craving.
Oh, yes, that is a good point. It's airport chocolate, clearly designed as American omiyage. It's probably not designed for the buyer to actually consume. In that case, I'm glad it turned out as well as it did. Thank you, Washington, and all your 8000 lakes and ponds.
