President Madagascar finally has his time to shine.

Anime Central 2020 has officially been cancelled. I knew it was coming--it'd be irresponsible not to do it, since there are something like 30,000 people from all over the country that attend--but it took them a long time to announce anything. Events as far away as July were getting cancelled and ACEN is in May, so they were definitely riding pretty close to the fire. What eventually forced their hand is when the hotels they were scheduled to host the con at told them that they were unable to host them due to coronavirus, and whether that triggered an insurance clause or whether it finally convinced them that there was no way to make ACEN happen, I don't know, but it's not on this year.

That doesn't mean I'm not disappointed about it, though. I've been going since 2005, and other than when I lived in Japan and in 2013 when [personal profile] schoolpsychnerd was in grad school and we just didn't have the money, I've been every year since then. It'll be a colder year without it.

There was some speculation that the mayor was going to issue a shelter-in-place order for Chicago in her speech yesterday, the way that Oak Park did on Thursday and San Francisco did earlier in the week, and then she just announced that anyone with any respiratory symptoms was required to stay home. But then today, the governor issued one for the entire state, running through April 7th, so that takes care of that. It's less restrictive than people were worried about--restaurants are still open for take-out, so are day-cares, so it's not a total closure of non-essential businesses--and since you can go out to exercise, there's no order to remain in your home. The governor also said that enforcement of the order wouldn't be a top priority, which I guess is good because I was worried this would be another vector for police harassing people. But it's pretty close to shut down everything.

Ben Shapiro wrote on twitter that the plan can't be "hunker down indefinitely" because eventually people will defy any laws because they'll need to make money so they can eat and pay rent, and I had a strong the worst person you know just made a great point moment. I have friends that this is going to cause enormous hardship to, and I'm pretty worried for a lot of the shops and restaurants in my neighborhood. We built modern society, with its just-in-time fulfillment and its doing more with less and its gig economy, on the idea that something like this couldn't happen, and now it has. Emoji Panic flailing

Hopefully this does the trick. If this goes on too long, the treatment could be worse than the disease.
