Part of parenting is flexibility and that means that Farmer's Market Dinner is on a Thursday this week.

We went to the farmers' market at the normal time and met [facebook.com profile] aaron.hosek there! We were thinking of meeting him there last week but he had to go get his car cleaned, but we did meet his girlfriend there by happenstance! This week we walked over and met him there, he got to meet Laila, he bought dinner--pizza and donuts, but from the farmer's market so they're obviously much healthier--and we bought the ingredients for burgers because that's what [instagram.com profile] sashagee wanted! I made curry last weekend and then a couple days ago I made fried rice using chicken hearts and livers that we also got from the farmer's market, and [instagram.com profile] sashagee is still a bit sensitive to food, so I have a lot of leftovers to eat. But burgers? Those she can do.

2021-06-03 - Farmer's Market Dinner

Burger and egg from Green Fire Farms, with bun made of seven grain bread from Breadman Company. Asparagus, potatoes, and tomato from Nichols Family Farm.

So when I was a child, my father often made his own bread--in my household, the cooking was done by my mother and the baking was done by my father--and would make sandwiches with it. It was a dark bread, which I love now, but as a child I hated it because it was crumbly. I didn't really think of making it toast for some reason--even when I'd put jam on bread I never toasted it--and so it tasted mealy and dry and I really didn't like it. I'm not sure if that bread is the reason I took so well to melba toast later on, but certainly as soon as I moved away from home I became much more of a rice person than a bread person.

I'm bringing this up because his bread was pretty similar. We bought the bread because no one had any buns available and I figured that I'd toast the bread and then put the burger on it, but the bread was too forward. A good hamburger bun exists to transport the meat to your mouth, allowing you to hold on to the whole thing without it collapsing, and then gets out of the way in favor of the meat and trimmings. This bread was extremely obvious and often overwhelmed everything else--it'd be great with honey or labneh on it, but as a hamburger bun it just didn't work. And without a good bun, a hamburger loses its foundation.

The asparagus and potato wedges were good. You know. Good. Emoji Bandana Waddle Dee

2021-06-03 - Farmer's Market Dessert

Caramel nut crostada from Leticia's Natural Bakery. I thought that I'd eaten this already, so I went back through my old farmer's market dinner post and found the week that I wrote about it and that told me the proper way to eat it--warmed up with ice cream. [instagram.com profile] sashagee used to make fun of how much ice cream I ate until she met the rest of my family and realized they're all like that, even [instagram.com profile] wanderluster_kp, who doesn't let her dairy allergy stop her from eating coconut milk ice cream. She called me in to change Laila while I was eating and said she didn't realize that I was eating ice cream, but of course if it can have ice cream, it should have ice cream.

Though back to the dessert, it was good! Not as sweet as I was worried about, so putting ice cream on it didn't make it overwhelming. It just made it more delicious.

That's all for today--I have a bunch of extra stuff to do so I need to get to it! I do have to go get a birth certificate tomorrow, though, so I may have more to write then (or after Shabbat), depending.
