...which is why I haven't posted in a week. There's stuff coming up this weekend, though, so I should have another post after that. I'm going to spend a day in the city with [livejournal.com profile] softlykarou and see Wicked. ^^

I had a big angst rant prepared but...well, you've heard it before, so I'm going to skip it. Instead, I'll pose an ethical question to you. This question is based on X3, but really, you don't have to have seen it to answer it. Here we go:

[Poll #744027][Poll #744027]

Any explanation you leave in comments would be helpful ^^

No, I don't think it is, and here's why: one of the metaphors that mutants have been used for is gay people. Now, clearly gay people don't have superpowers, but the whole being feared by "normal" people, forming subcultures, hiding who they are (which often isn't obvious just by looking at them)... The line "Well, have you tried not being a mutant?" from X2 is a perfect example of this. Now, imagine what would happen if some Christian fundy whacko came up with a "cure" for gay people. Clearly, there are gay people who'd want it--fundamentalists who feel terrible about their sexuality, people who are tired of being persecuted and treated as second-class citizens, and so on. However, merely developing a "cure" means you're automatically starting from biased principles. You're assuming that the condition is a disease and that it should be treated as an abnormality to be avoided (which, admittedly, is what a lot of people think of gay people as >_<) Taking the cure is buying into the idea that there's something wrong with them that needs curing--that they are, indeed, "flawed' and need to be "fixed."

The one problem with my analogy is that mutants aren't gay people. I mean, people like Beast and Rogue have reasons of their own for wanting a cure. In some mutants, it's more a curse than a gift, and I can see why they'd want it. But calling it a "cure" starts from bad premises.

Also, did they have to make the person in charge of the project German? I mean, really...

Finally: Judges orders arguing lawyers to settle dispute with rock, paper, scissors.

While you pretty much said everything I wanted to say and possibly much better than I can say it. Admittedly I am a little torn because I really feel for Beast and Rogue. Still, there's nothing to cure, it's who they are.

ahhh... but you see, we never said that they shouldnt develop the "antimutation serum" just that it shouldnt be refered to as a "cure". also on a side note, beast would still be blue and furry if he got demutated... at least the beast from the comics would. the blue and furry part was from a science experiment gone wrong while he was with the avengers, not an inherant part of his mutation.
