The octopus eats delicious locally-grown food

I made a dumb Utena meme on the tumblr I share with
schoolpsychnerd. You might like it.
On Tuesday, before Japanese class, we went to the Museum of Contemporary Art to see The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg, an exhibit of Murakami Takashi (村上隆)'s art. I didn't know anything about it before we went and modern art isn't usually to my taste, but I was surprised by how much I exjoyed the exhibit. Not the pictures where DOB, Murakami's cute Mickey-Mouse-esque character, is unfolded and stretched across a campus in a nightmare of teeth and eyes, but the works that are more traditional.
Examples:

Cherry Blossoms.
This is designed in the style of 墨絵 (sumie) painting, which would have just black ink strokes on paper with maybe a tiny bit of color. The colors on this one really make it pop out to me and remind me of going to Ueno Park or Lake Yachiyo for ohanami and watching the cherry blossoms fall.

These were on opposite ends of the hall facing each other. There's a tradition in Japanese legend of 赤鬼青鬼 ("Red oni, blue oni"), where the red oni is driven by fiery rages and the blue oni is calm and composed, and they're friends (or sometimes colleagues or rivals). If you've seen any Japanese media, you've probably seen a modern version of this ancient trope. Asuka and Rei from Evangelion is the example that springs to mind to me, but I'm sure there are more recognizable modern ones too. Asuna and Kirito, say.
Temples in Japan often have paired statues flanking the gates. Usually Fūjin and Raijin, but that's where I developed an appreciation for these kind of paired statues.

This was part of a larger work that took up an entire wall, composed after the March 11th earthquake when Murakami took up more traditional themes again. There was no way I was going to get the entire work in one picture, so when deciding whether to focus on the skulls floating among the waves, the asuras, or the firebird, I chosen the latter. がんばれ、日本.
Yesterday, both
schoolpsychnerd and I went to the farmer's market together, which meant that I had some input on the contents of the meal! I originally thought about having duck and pita bread, but there were no bakers selling any pita at the market, so we settled on something different and made sandwiches instead. Ingredients are mostly my idea with
schoolpsychnerd's input,
schoolpsychnerd was the one who put them all together into the final meal.

Sliced kohlrabi, roasted tomatoes with cilantro lettuce, and duck roasted in a dutch over on a toasted pretzel bun with homemade ricotta, roasted tomatoes, and negi.

Duck cracklings.
schoolpsychnerd didn't want to include the skin in the sandwich because it would make it much stretchier and harder to eat, but being from Kentucky, she had the idea to fry it separately. These were delicious.

Michigan sour cherry pie. This was bought at the farmer's market, but it actually comes from a nearby store called First Slice Pie Cafe. I wanted something a little different than the usual entirely-fruit-based desserts we've been having, and while a pie isn't a huge change, it was enough that I was happy. And it was delicious.
I have a dentist appointment in two hours to reapply a sealant on my teeth, so of course I'm very nervous. I'm going to
schoolpsychnerd's dentist, because he's within walking distance and she recommended him to me, and I know that sealants are an easy procedure and it shouldn't take more than half an hour, if that. But any number of things could go wrong, and even though I know they won't, what if they did?
But there's not much point in worrying about that now. Back to playing Wind Waker.
