dorchadas: (Darker than Black)
[personal profile] dorchadas
Normally I don't like doing Raaka twice in a row, but I've been sitting on this green-tea-flavored bar for a while and this weekend was the perfect time to eat it. Yesterday, I went along to [personal profile] schoolpsychnerd's school to help her with the Sports Day even that she was helping to organize. [personal profile] schoolpsychnerd is the sponsor of the Anime Club, and she got together with the sponsor of the Japanese Club to put together a competition between the two groups including some traditional Sports Day events--the relay race, the clothing relay (where each relay-racer has to add an additional item of clothing before running), the three-legged race, the ōdama race (rolling a giant ball), the samurai battle (several students pick up another student, and each riding student tries to snatch a headband from the head of the other team's samurai), a tug-of-war, and so on. They couldn't do the tire retrieval game (pile of tires, the team that gets the most wins), or the centipede race (a group of students holding onto each other that can only advance by the student at the back crawling over the backs of the others to the front) due to safety concerns and Americans being much more likely to sue than Japanese people.

I missed the radio calisthenics at the beginning, but the rest was fun! It wasn't as grand an event as the all-school Sports Days at Chiyoda or Suzugamine, but participation was pretty good. There were about 15 people who came out from the two clubs, enough to form teams for each event. The Anime Club lost by two points in the end, and I overheard them mentioning that it was because they had fewer people so they couldn't rotate people in and out like the Japanese Club could. That's plausible to me--the Anime Club won the first three events and then didn't do very well from then on.

This was the first year. Next year will be even better! Unlike this chocolate, which needs a lot more effort to improve.

Week 56 packaging
I love the shiny green foil effect.

This was such a disappointment. There wasn't any green tea flavor in it at all--just a little bit of crunch, and a very occasional hint of bitter that didn't last for more than a moment. As such, I don't have anything to say about it because there's nothing to say. This was chocolate with a pleasant crunch. That's all. Maybe if it had been matcha-flavored, the tea would have been strong enough to show over the chocolate, but it wasn't. It's actually a lot like the last Raaka limited-batch chocolate we ordered, so maybe we should stop getting excited. Emoji comfort

However, I will use this space to offer an alternate suggestion: Meiji rich matcha biscuits. They're similar to Oreos, but the sandwich part is cakier and more chocolatey and the filling is matcha-flavored instead of sugar fluff, including matcha's bitterness. I've got an (empty) box of them on my desk right now, after I ate them all a few days ago, and they're far more delicious than this chocolate. If you want a green-tea-flavored chocolate, get it from someone who has practice making it correctly.

Week 56 chocolate
No tea bits? That's a warning sign.

[personal profile] schoolpsychnerd's Opinion
I love crunchy chocolate. Crunch bars are something I really enjoy and I love green tea flavored things. However, this wasn't that great. The chocolate was good, but I didn't taste any of the green tea.I liked the crunch, it was a good mild crunch but I didn't get any of that bite of green tea. Maybe it's because they didn't use matcha, which tends to have a more distinct flavor? I don't know! I'd eat it again but I wouldn't seek it out.
I wouldn't bother seeking it out because there's nothing special about it. It's just chocolate. Might as well just get chocolate. No reason to order something special.
