Friday afternoon, there was a bunch of noise coming from downstairs, from the guy below me who has been an inconsiderate asshole since the day I moved in. I assumed he was doing more work and didn't think that much about it, but
sashagee started noticing a smell. I couldn't really smell it, but she said it got stronger and stronger and eventually I went down to check on what it was and found a work crew staining the floor of the unit below me. They had one window open very slightly, no fans, and no other ventilation. In winter.
I couldn't really smell anything in the unit (though I could out in the hallway), but
sashagee was nearly in tears from how strong the smell was and how worried she was about the effects on the baby. She wanted to go to her parents' house for the night until things aired out and wanted me to come, I wanted to stay to air the place out, and I was fully prepared to until while I was opening the windows and turning on the faucets, I caught a strong whiff of floor varnish, so I acquiesced and we stayed at her parents on Friday night, which threw most of our weekend into turmoil. I called the building manager and asked if why I hadn't been notified about the work being done and she said she hadn't been notified either, and after a bit of investigating, she emailed back the guy below me's response, which was that he was very sorry but he had accepted a work option at the last minute and hadn't had time to clear it with anyone, and he asked them to switch to water-based sealant instead of oil-based for future layers. I wrote back:
In good news, I called the company who did the genetic testing I had done because I hadn't seen a bill from them yet, and because my insurance's initial explanation of benefits suggested that I was going to be charged $1150 out of an $12,000 bill (America!
). When I called I was told that I was marked "no patient responsibility," meaning I owe nothing. It's a mark of how great our system is that I had to call them to find out and that I don't trust them not to lie--I still expect to receive a bill and have to call someone to straighten it out. And for this we pay-

I appreciate that he was in a difficult situation, but that doesn't change the fact that my pregnant girlfriend was exposed to possibly toxic fumes with no warning.I have not yet received a reply. 🙄 His apology doesn't change that he thought staining floors during a pandemic during winter with no warning is okay.

Date: 2021-Feb-02, Tuesday 01:34 (UTC)I know the feeling with the billing. I wouldn't trust them either. I was literally making payments, then they sent me a thing saying I didn't owe. I called and was ready to make sure to pay again, and she said "oh no, you're fine" I'm like, OK. Then... months later, I get a collection company calling me. After I already had a payment plan. Like wth.
I hope your people aren't lying/misinformed and you don't get screwed by it. Ugh.

Date: 2021-Feb-09, Tuesday 15:29 (UTC)I have very good insurance--working for the AMA means our insurance doesn't deny any claims because it's a doctor's job to determine treatment, not some bureaucrat's--but nonetheless... We'll see I guess!
