I don't have a ton of other stuff to talk about this week, so let me jump straight to dinner.

2021-07-29 - Farmer's Market Dinner

Skin-on chicken thighs from Green Fire Farms coated with store-bought maple barbecue sauce, along with honey-glazed carrots and steamed zucchini from Nichols Farm and Orchard, and store-bought curried potato wedges.

I was a little worried about this meal because of the profusion of flavors--sweet carrots, smoky-sweet chicken, curried potatoes--but as I was preparing my own plate I kept hearing [instagram.com profile] sashagee tell Laila how delicious everything was and how she was looking forward to Laila being able to eat my cooking. Emoji ~ Cat smile She ate everything, which considering how her tastes had changed from pregnancy, I counted as a blessing. Her favorite was the carrots, which surprised me--I thought the carrots didn't have a lot of taste when eaten by themselves, just a bit of tang, but she loved them with the honey.

My favorite was probably the potatoes. The chicken was good, don't get me wrong, but I'm not usually a fan of barbecue sauce unless the primary taste is vinegar, and with a maple barbecue sauce that obviously wasn't true. And even though I patted the chicken down beforehand and raised the oven temperature, the skin didn't crisp up. It was good, and I'm thinking of making them again for a dinner party we were invited to on Saturday, but I need to do something different to give the skin that crunch. The potatoes were curried and I really do love curry.

2021-07-29 - Farmer's Market Dessert

A lingonberry almond cake from Lost Larson. I actually thought this was their tea bun when I was just looking at it at the table, so when I sat down and took my first bite I was pleasantly surprised. Lost Larson's website describes at as "our beloved best-seller" and I can see why. The cake was moist and crumbly even though I bought it on Wednesday and didn't eat it until Thursday night, and the inside was filled with a bit of lingonberry compote that complemented the cake beautifully.

I normally have ice cream with just about any kind of cake or pie. This did not need it.

We've been trying to stop Laila from sucking on her fingers, so [instagram.com profile] sashagee has been putting little mittens on her. She hates this, and she'll get into a loop where she brings her hands up to her face, tastes the cloth, and moves her hands away, all the while crying. I've been reading that you can't break any habits a baby has without a lot of tears, both from you and from the baby, but that doesn't make it any easier to endure! It'll just take a lot of hugs, I guess. Emoji glomp That's how I deal with her crying before bed--I just hold her and let her cry, talking to her in a low even voice, until she calms down and falls asleep. Hugs cure a lot.

And speaking of which, she's twitching a lot. The sleeper awakes. The Sixth House is risen.
