Visit to Mitsuwa
2025-Sep-22, Monday 15:41Sunday morning, after Laila's long stay in the hospital, Papa and Nana came to get her--as she says, "Papa and Nana come and get you!"--and take her away for an overnight visit, since she hasn't stayed there for a while. That left
sashagee and I with some free time, and what we eentually did with it is that we went to the Japanese grocery store Mitsuwa.
We went a bit later so we could get there in time for dinner, though we still left at 3:30 p.m. so we could stop by Goodwill on the way and drop off some of Laila's old baby furniture that she doesn't need anymore. We eventually arrived around 4:45 p.m., parked in the parking lot, and walked in. The last time we were there the restaurants were already shutting down at 6:30 p.m., so rather than worry about getting all shopping done first and then try to find a restaurant that was still open, we went first to the food court and made our rounds.
sashagee was a bit tempted by the crepes, but we eventually both settled on Tо̄kyо̄ Shokudо̄, where we got curry:

I got the egg chicken katsu,
sashagee got traditional katsucurry (with pork). It was delicious--of course, it was delicious last time too--and while I know how to make Japanese curry at home now, there's something nice about living in a time where I can just get it in a restaurant. I remember moving back to America in 2011 just as ramen really started to pick up in places that didn't have larger Asian diaspora populations, so I didn't have the experience of "this food I love is now totally impossible for me to get." And now we've come far enough that just a mile away is a branch of a Japanese ramen chain (Rakkan) that serves vegan broth so I never have to worry about pork in it! What a world we live in.
Anyway, after finishing our meal we went to the Kinokuniya in Mitsuwa, since last time we were here,
sashagee wanted to check if they had any light novels with English translations. We didn't get any of those, and she decided not to get the Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage artbook because 1) it was in Japanese and 2) it was $60, but she did get some stationary and pens because she wants to start writing letters. I got some postcards for the same reason, since I need to write back to some of my students who wrote me...a long time ago (I really need to get better at letters). Having done that, we moved on to the grocery store. We didn't really get any staples--though we did talk about how if we lived nearby we'd do all of our shopping at Mitsuwa--but we got some more dashi, some senbei for
sashagee, mitarashi dango, sake, takuan, beni shо̄ga, furikake, naruto, frozen gyо̄za, frozen anpan, seaweed, momiji manjū (a favorite, a Hiroshima specialty), milk candy, and some bentо̄ for lunch today. here's mine:

Eaten cold as is traditional, though I did warm up the rice and add an egg to replace the existing potato salad.
It was delicious.
