Hello, shark daddy

I generally don't write much, if anything, about games while I'm playing them, but Breath of the Wild is a special case. I've already spent three times as much time playing it as I have the single longest amount of time it took me to beat any previous Zelda game (Skyward Sword, 35 hours), and I've been spending the time exploring the whole map and tracking down shrines, visiting stables and doing sidequests, buying a house, tracking down Koroks, and otherwise avoiding all the vital tasks that I should be doing. But I finally got through most of the map and I'm close to getting all the Koroks I need to unlock all my bag slots, so I finally went to the Zora's domain to speak to the prince, like the various Zora scattered around asked me to do like eighty hours of gameplay ago.
That means I met the prince of the Zora, and now I understand the memes:

"I am Cid! Prince of the Zora!"
I don't know what his dialogue or demeanor is like in English, because I'm only familiar with the memes where Link and Saidon start a whirlwind romance. But I can see where that characterization came from. Cid leaps down from his perch on a tower and greets Link, asking him to come to the Zora city and help them stop the rain. When Link agrees, Cid enthusiastically says that of course he would, and then promises to cheer him on as he ascends the route to the Zora city past all the monsters that infest it.
Look at that character design. He has military-style epaulets, but part of the trim looks like it's his fins. His head is shaped a bit like a crown and he's also wearing a plume. He's wearing a cravat even though he's a shark-man who leaps into the water and starts swimming away immediately after Link and he are done talking. He's amazing.
Also, I love how the furigana over his title says it's pronounced not ōji, but rather "Prince."

"Thank you Link! Of course, you're just the kind of man I thought you were!"
I haven't gotten to the city yet, but as you climb up toward it, Prince Cid keeps popping out of the river and cheering Link on, saying that he's sure he can make it past all the monsters and dangers in the way. I mean, honestly I could use someone like that in my own life. Someone who believes in me, who believes that I'm strong enough to overcome everything in my path. To paraphrase TTGL, if I can't believe in myself, I could believe someone else who believes in me.
I'm not really getting any romantic overtones from their interactions, though. Cid's the stock anime genki guy, super enthusiastic about the hero. They're like battle brothers, although they haven't fought together yet. And honestly, I have a hard time buying that Breath of the Wild Link would have any romantic feelings toward anyone what with all the crippling untreated PTSD he's probably suffering from after losing the battle against Ganon a century ago and traveling the decimated and monster-infested landscape that he knows is the result of his failures. I doubt the Shrine of Regeneration heals mental trauma.
A year and a half late, but I'm glad I can finally experience the memes.
